I am happily married to Russell Strong. Russell was raised in Auburn, Alabama. He retired after 20 years in the U.S. Navy and became a history teacher. He has been teaching 8th grade world history at Berry Middle School for the past 23 years. I am blessed to have three beautiful children. Shelby is a graduate of UAB. Sophie is a junior at Auburn University, and James, our youngest, is attending Jeff State.
I am a proud product of Chelsea, Alabama. I graduated from Chelsea High School in 1982 and attended Auburn University. I received a Bachelor of Science in 1986 and Master of Education from Auburn in 1989. In 1996, I earned my PhD. in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University. During my years of teaching, I also attained my National Board Teaching Certificate, and a special certification for Gifted Education from the University of Alabama.
I began my teaching career 31 years ago. I have loved having the opportunity to touch thousands of young lives and to inspire students to be the best that they can be. I have taught at middle school, high school and college levels. My teaching experiences include three years at the University of Montevallo, seven years at Thompson Middle School, four years at Thompson High School, and ten years at Oak Mountain High School. After three decades of teaching, it is time for me to make a more systemic impact. I want to see the art of teaching continue to be a chosen path for some of our best and brightest Alabama high school graduates.
